Two Pakistani teams of four students each have managed to win the top two positions in the Huawei ICT Competition Middle East 2020.
The team that won the first prize include two students Kalim Ullah, Maria Aftab from the National University of Sciences And Technology (NUST), and Asadullah from the Mehran University of Engg. & Technology, Jamshoro. The top two teams have been awarded USD 20,000 as a cash prize, along with exam vouchers, Huawei mobiles, and official international certification.
In the competition this year, over 15000 students and 440 universities from all over the world participated. 13 teams from 27 universities competed on the final day in which Pakistan teams emerged victoriously.
A student from NUST and a member of the team that secured the first position, Kalim Ullah said, “It was an exciting and incredibly proud moment for Pakistan. It is a huge honor to represent Pakistan in the esteemed competition and to bring glory to our country”.
Expressing their happiness the students thanked the Chinese tech giant for offering a great learning opportunity during the days of Covid-19 that affected the global education system. The other team member of the winning squad, Maria said, “It was a unique experience as we witnessed the power of distance learning in its fullest form during the pandemic. Learning was the most important aspect of the contest that came along with generous monetary benefits”.
Huawei said that the aim of this competition to provide the students with an exclusive, massive platform to compete with international teams and give them exposure to the IT world. Both teams will not be preparing for the Global Final to compete with a talented student from all over the world, after coming to the top in the region.
“It was a unique experience as we witnessed the power of distance learning in its fullest form during the pandemic.” For Maria too, learning was the most important aspect of the contest that came along with “generous monetary benefits.” Thousands of students from Pakistan applied for the highly competitive tech contest but Huawei selected the top 500, the official statement said.
“The list was further narrowed down to 150 students” who were offered free training and virtual classes during the preliminary round. Finally, the best 30 students from Pakistan were finalized for the final national round and shortlisted the top six for the Huawei ICT competition Middle East , Asadullah explained, adding that “we were among the six lucky Pakistanis selected for the regional contest”.
