Google Arts & Culture today launched a new online adventure that allows users to take a virtual tour of the Great Wall of China. The “Walk the Great Wall of China” experience involves an exclusive 360-degree virtual tour of one of the wall’s best-preserved regions, including 370 pictures of the Great Wall in total and 35 narratives that go into architectural aspects concerning the monument.
People Can Now Visit the Largest Man-Made Structure Virtually
“As the largest man-made structure in the world, the Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic and popular heritage sites anywhere. Over 10 million people visit each year—but not everyone has the opportunity to see the Great Wall first-hand,” Pierre Caessa, Google Arts & Cultures program manager, stated in a blog post. “Today, in collaboration with renowned Great Wall expert Dong Yaohui and curators from Gubei Water Town, Google Arts & Culture presents a new theme page enabling people to visit the Great Wall virtually.”

The Virtual Tour of the Great Wall of China Comprises a Panoramic View
The virtual tour experience comprises a panoramic view of the wall, along with 360-degree views of the watchtower and various sections of the wall. Moreover, users can further learn more about how and when the Great Wall was constructed. For those who want to probe even further into the history of the Great Wall, they can decode the walls and bricks along the wall. For example, users can get a closer look at obscure impressions, stamps and ambiguous patterns engraved on the bricks.
Google Also Allows Users to Design Their Own VR Tours
In addition to this, Google has rolled out various 360-degree virtual tours over the past few years and continues to leverage the technology. Back in 2016, the search giant launched a virtual experience that enabled users to explore U.S. national parks. Since then, the corporation has rolled out similar virtual tours and has also examined using virtual reality in different ways. For example, Google launched a virtual reality art gallery in 2017 and also launched a “Tour Creator” means in 2018 to let students design their own VR tours.
