Pakistan now stands at the 99th position among the 132 economies featured in the Global Innovation Index (GII), which categorizes world economies according to their innovation capacities. Consisting of around 80 indicators, grouped into invention inputs and outputs, the GII intends to capture the multi-dimensional aspects of innovation.
Global Innovation Index Assesses the Critical Driver of Economic Expansion in Countries
The Global Innovation Index is issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. Acknowledging that innovation is a critical driver of economic expansion, the GII intends to provide an innovation ranking and rich research referencing around 130 economies. Over the previous decade, the Global Innovation Index has shown itself as both a leading reference on innovation and a “tool for action” for economies that comprise the GII into their innovation agendas.
Previously Pakistan Ranked at 107th Position in 2020
Pakistan’s ranking on the Global Innovation Index was 107 in 2020 and 105 in 2019. “Pakistan ranks 17th among the 34 lower-middle-income group economies,” the GII report stated. “Pakistan ranks 7th among the 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia.” The report further informed that Pakistan has conducted above the lower-middle-income group average in four pillars, namely: organizations, business refinement, knowledge and technology outcomes, and imaginative outputs.

In Central and Southern Asia, Pakistan achieved above the regional standard in the exact four pillars. The GII is a ranking of the innovation capabilities and results of world economies. It assesses innovation based on benchmarks that comprise associations, human capital, and analysis, infrastructure, credit, investment, linkages; the creation, absorption, and dispersal of knowledge and visionary creations.
