The two-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has resumed the e-challan system, hence, allowing the City Traffic Police (CTP) Lahore to start issuing tickets again through Safe City cameras. The LHC’s two-membered bench suspends the previous LHC’s single bench decision of declaring the e-challan system illegal, for having no legal backing.
E-challan system is highly effective against the traffic violators
During the hearing of the review petition filed by the Punjab government against the single-bench decision, the provincial government officials argued that the e-challans were being issued to motorists over violation of the traffic rules. However, a single bench declared the system illegal for having no legal backing, he added. He further declared that the challan system is completely supported by the law.
The lawyer requested the court to suspend the single-member bench decision until the completion of the review petition. The bench, headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, after hearing detailed arguments of the law officer, suspended the single bench decision and sought a reply from the parties. Earlier, the single-bench said that CTP Lahore holds no authority for issuing e-tickets to citizens for traffic violations without receiving approval from the Punjab cabinet.
Electronic Challan Online Payment system
Punjab Safe Cities Authority introduced the facility of online E-Challan payment in Lahore on 1sr Jan 2021. It was inaugurated at the Punjab Safe Cities Authority headquarters by Inspector General of Police Punjab Inam Ghani. The challans can be paid through mobile banking, which includes 23 banks, and internet banking. It can also be paid via ATMs. In addition, services like Easy-Paisa, Jazz Cash, HBL Konnect, UBL Omni, and TCS can also be used for making e-challan payments.
