The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has cautioned the public against phishing and fraudulent links that are currently circulating on various digital platforms, including WhatsApp, social media websites, and text messages; these deceptive links falsely claim association with PTA’s Device Identification Registration & Blocking System (DIRBS), putting users at risk of compromising their personal information.
PTA Cautioned Public Against Phishing Attempts
In a recent statement, the PTA highlighted the emergence of misleading messages masquerading as official communications; these messages claim that the user’s SIM is involved in suspicious activities and prompt them to check the number of SIMs at a provided link. Another variant warns users that their phone registration will be suspended unless they visit a specified link. PTA emphasized that these deceptive tactics are specifically designed to trick individuals into clicking on malicious links, posing a serious threat to their personal data.
Use of Official Platforms Only
PTA urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from clicking on links from unknown numbers or senders. The authority encouraged users to report such phone numbers and links for blocking through PTA’s complaint management system. To verify the status of their devices, users were advised to exclusively use official channels, such as DIRBS, SMS IMEIs to 8484, or the official Device Verification App available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. In emphasizing the importance of vigilance, the PTA urged the public to prioritize the use of its official platforms and shortcodes to safeguard their personal information.
