Pakistan has made a breakthrough by launching a satellite-based broadband service that rivals Elon Musk’s Starlink. Shaza Fatima, the Minister of State for Information Technology, shared the milestone achievement, emphasizing the strategic importance of PakSat-MM1 within Pakistan’s newly established space policy. Fatima highlighted that this initiative addresses one of Pakistan’s biggest challenges—providing reliable internet access to rural areas where traditional infrastructure development has been slow or impractical. With PakSat-MM1, the government aims to bridge the digital divide and improve internet speeds across the country, including in regions that have long been neglected by conventional telecommunications networks.

Potential for Growth and Innovation

Officials, including SUPARCO Chairman Yusuf Khan and PakSat CEO Khalid Rashid, have lauded PakSat-MM1 for its capabilities. The satellite is designed to offer not only high-speed broadband internet but also 5G connectivity and enhanced data transfer services which is expected to reduce the high costs and logistical hurdles of telecom infrastructure development in remote areas. The officials expressed optimism that this leap in technology could lead to substantial economic growth, potentially boosting Pakistan’s GDP by as much as 2.5%, while also enabling advancements in key sectors like healthcare, education, and business.
