A recent survey by Ipsos Pakistan reveals that the majority of youths prefer staying in Pakistan, with 74% of respondents expressing no desire to leave the country permanently. The findings highlight a strong sense of commitment among the younger generation to contribute to Pakistan’s progress, despite challenges. The survey, conducted in late September 2024, included over 1,600 participants aged 18 to 34.

Majority of Youths Prefer Staying in Pakistan: Survey Findings

When asked about leaving Pakistan for permanent relocation, only 26% of the surveyed youth indicated an interest in moving abroad, while a substantial 74% expressed their intent to stay and work towards the country’s development. Among those wishing to leave, the Middle East emerged as the top destination, with 30% favoring Saudi Arabia and 20% choosing Dubai. Other preferred destinations included the UK (9%), Canada (8%), the US (8%), and Europe (5%).

The survey also revealed major regional and class-based differences. Islamabad recorded the highest percentage (46%) of youth intending to leave, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (35%), Punjab (27%), Balochistan (21%), and Sindh (20%). Additionally, a greater proportion of privileged and upper-middle-class respondents (36%) expressed the desire to settle abroad compared to the middle class (28%) and underprivileged class (23%).

Optimism Among Youth

The survey emphasizes a growing sense of resilience and optimism among Pakistani youth, who are willing to remain in the country and contribute to its growth. The commitment is particularly encouraging amid global economic and social uncertainties. While some seek opportunities abroad, the overwhelming majority appear to believe in Pakistan’s potential, showcasing a blend of patriotism and hope for a brighter future.
