Instagram creators can now use AI doppelgangers to engage with their followers more efficiently. The feature is part of Meta’s AI Studio, a toolset that enables creators to develop AI personas that can interact with fans on their behalf. Launched to address the overwhelming volume of messages popular users receive, these AI doppelgangers promise to enhance interaction without the creators needing to be constantly online.

AI Doppelgangers for More Engagement

Meta’s AI Studio was first introduced at the Connect event last fall. Initially, the AI tools were tested with a select group of prominent Instagrammers. Now, Meta is expanding access to more US-based creators, allowing them to create AI characters tailored to their personal style and content. Connor Hayes, VP of Product for AI Studio at Meta, explains that these AI personas can use existing content such as comments, captions, and transcripts from Reels, along with custom instructions, to respond authentically on behalf of the creators. This capability is especially valuable for creators with large followings, who often struggle to manage the influx of messages they receive daily.

Challenges of AI Integration

Mark Zuckerberg has plans for these AI chatbots, envisioning “hundreds of millions” of creator-made AIs across Meta’s platforms. While the concept holds great potential, previous experiments with celebrity AI chatbots revealed some confusion among users about the authenticity of their interactions. Meta aims to address this by ensuring that the new AI doppelgangers act as clear extensions of the creators themselves. Besides aiding creators, Meta’s AI Studio will also allow regular users to create custom AI characters that can discuss specific topics, generate memes, or provide advice.

These chatbots are powered by Meta’s Llama 3.1 model and come with safety policies to ensure responsible use. However, users should be aware that AI-generated messages might sometimes be inaccurate or inappropriate, as indicated by disclaimers accompanying these interactions.
