Recent speculation regarding the privatization of Karachi airport has raised concerns among travelers and stakeholders. However, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has firmly addressed these rumors, clarifying the current management and future plans for Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.
Clarification on Privatization of Karachi Airport
The PCAA spokesperson emphasized that Karachi airport remains fully under the management of the authority. The spokesperson urged the public to disregard any misleading information about the airport’s privatization. The statement came amidst widespread speculation that Jinnah International Airport was being considered for privatization, leading to uncertainty and confusion among airport employees and travelers.
The PCAA’s clear communication aims to reassure all stakeholders that there are no current plans to transfer the management of Karachi airport to private entities. The clarification highlights the PCAA’s commitment to maintaining control over one of Pakistan’s key international gateways, ensuring continued oversight and operational standards.
Developments in Aviation Sector
While Karachi airport remains under PCAA control, there have been developments in Pakistan’s aviation sector. Various airlines have introduced a new tax on international travel from Pakistan, which took effect immediately. The tax hike includes a substantial increase in Federal Excise Duty (FED) on economy and economy plus tickets. For instance, the FED on economy class tickets has surged from Rs 5,000 to Rs 12,500, and on club class flights from Pakistan to the United States, it has increased from Rs 250,000 to Rs 350,000.
In addition, the PCAA recently issued guidelines for the outsourcing of Islamabad Airport under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The airport will be outsourced following the Public-Private Partnership Act of 2017, with tenders open until July 15. This move reflects the PCAA’s strategy to engage private partners in specific airport operations while retaining overall management of key facilities like Karachi airport.
