The Pakistan government has announced the formation of a committee to identify businesses supporting Israel financially, particularly those contributing to the conflict in Gaza, this move follows demands from the religious group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and aligns with the country’s pro-Palestinian stance.

Government Response to Businesses Supporting Israel

Rana Sanaullah, the Prime Minister’s political adviser, revealed the decision after successfully negotiating an end to a week-long sit-in organized by the TLP. The group had been pressing for an official ban on products from companies supporting Israel and for increased humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Sanaullah emphasized that Israel’s actions in Gaza, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, constitute war crimes. He stated that Pakistan would continue to condemn Israel’s actions on all international platforms and take every possible step to support the Palestinian cause.

The newly formed committee will identify companies with any direct or indirect ties to Israel and recommend a boycott of their products. The objective is to curtail financial support for Israel’s military actions by targeting the economic interests of supportive businesses; this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to aligning with public sentiment and addressing the concerns raised by the TLP.

Social Media Response

The decision to form this committee has garnered support from various sectors of Pakistani society. Many citizens have been calling for a boycott of foreign companies suspected of supporting Israel since the conflict in Gaza intensified. Social media platforms are flooded with campaigns urging consumers to avoid products from these companies and opt for alternatives. Public figures and influencers have also joined the movement, amplifying calls for a boycott.

The ongoing conflict has claimed at least 39,000 lives, including many women and children, fueling global outrage and protests. In Pakistan, civil society and political groups have consistently led pro-Palestinian rallies, demonstrating solidarity with the Palestinian people. The TLP’s protest at the Faizabad Interchange, which disrupted traffic between Rawalpindi and Islamabad, was a manifestation of this support.
