The controversial PIA Paris flight ad has drawn public backlash, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order an immediate inquiry. The advertisement, featuring a PIA plane near the Eiffel Tower with the tagline “We’re coming,” was widely criticized for being misleading and unprofessional. This issue was discussed during a Senate session, where the challenges facing Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were also highlighted.
Public Reaction to PIA Paris Flight Ad
The advertisement sparked ridicule, with many questioning the agency responsible for the campaign and the official who approved it. Senator Sherry Rehman raised the issue during the Senate session, calling the ad an embarrassment for the national airline. Critics argued that the tagline misrepresented PIA’s intentions, especially given the airline’s ongoing operational and reputational challenges.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar revealed that the Prime Minister had ordered an inquiry into the ad’s creation and approval process. He emphasized the need for accountability in maintaining PIA’s public image, especially during its critical restructuring phase.
Challenges Facing PIA
During the session, Rehman also highlighted concerns about PIA’s state, noting that out of 34 aircraft in its fleet, only 19 are operational. Dar responded by confirming that 22 planes are now functional, while 11 remain under repair.
He further addressed PIA’s privatisation plans, aiming to involve Pakistan’s corporate sector to improve operations. Efforts to restore flights to the UK and other destinations are underway, with a team expected to finalize the process soon.
The inquiry into the PIA Paris flight ad highlights government’s efforts to rebuild the airline’s credibility amidst longstanding challenges.
