Highlighting the country’s progress in the IT sector, the Chairman emphasized the importance of this technological advancement for Pakistan’s digital future.
Progress in Digital Infrastructure: 5G launch in Pakistan
During the meeting, various issues concerning the IT sector were addressed. The PTA Chairman provided an overview of the current internet access in the country, noting that 56% of the population is now connected. The statistic highlights the progress Pakistan has made in enhancing its digital infrastructure. The upcoming 5G auction, scheduled for March or April next year, is expected to further revolutionize the digital landscape. The Chairman’s briefing also touched upon the local manufacturing of mobile phones, with 37 companies producing 20 million units annually, 40% of which are smartphones, this development is crucial for increasing accessibility and supporting the nationwide digitization effort.
Moving Forward
The meeting also discussed the challenges facing Pakistan’s IT sector. One of the key issues raised was the high cost of mobile phones, which was criticized for hindering access and slowing down the digitization process. In response, the Cabinet Secretary mentioned that local mobile production and installment payment options are now available, making devices more affordable for the general public.
Moreover, the PTA Chairman discussed the security concerns that have prevented social media platforms from opening physical offices in Pakistan, though virtual offices are being considered. The lack of legislation and regulations for taxing international advertisements on social media was another critical point, with ongoing negotiations with major platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
