The local manufacturing of SIMs and smart cards will play a huge role in the economy as the country has to spend a lot on importing SIMs.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated the third phase of its ongoing SIM Blocking Operation. The phase focuses on permanently deactivating all SIM cards registered under the names of deceased individuals. The regulatory body has taken this step to combat the illegal use of mobile phone SIMs and prevent potential misuse of such SIM cards. PTA has issued a deadline of October 15, urging family members to transfer ownership of these SIMs by presenting necessary documents.

Targeting Deceased Persons’ SIMs in SIM Blocking Operation

In this phase of the SIM Blocking Operation, the PTA has made it mandatory for the relatives of deceased individuals to transfer the ownership of SIMs issued in their name. To complete this process, families must provide a valid death certificate, proof of relationship with the deceased, the original SIM card, and documentation of the current SIM in use. The PTA has stressed the importance of following this protocol to ensure the SIMs are either transferred or blocked permanently after the deadline.

What Had Happened in the Previous Phases?

PTA’s SIM Blocking Operation has already shown progress in its earlier phases. The regulator has successfully deactivated SIMs that were registered using expired ID cards before 2017. Moreover, around 70,000 SIM cards linked to canceled or fraudulent ID cards have also been blocked, ensuring that unauthorized users are unable to exploit these numbers, this initiative is part of PTA’s ongoing mission to enhance national security and prevent the misuse of mobile services across Pakistan.
