Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has once again shown his generosity and strong personal beliefs by refusing to accept interest on a loan he provided for the production of Ittefaq (2017). The film, directed by Abhay Chopra, was financed in part by Khan, who stepped in to support the project despite not reading the script. Filmmaker Renu Chopra, wife of the late director Ravi Chopra, revealed that Khan refused to take any interest in his investment, calling it “haraam” (forbidden).
Shah Rukh Khan’s Generosity and Beliefs
Renu Chopra shared in an interview that when she told Shah Rukh Khan about her financial struggles in producing Ittefaq, he immediately offered to invest in the film. Even after the movie was completed, when a normal interest rate would be applied, Khan refused to take any additional money, citing his personal beliefs against earning interest. His decision was based on his principle that financial gains should not come from interest but from ethical investments. His support was not just financial—he believed in Abhay Chopra’s vision and was willing to back the project purely out of trust.
Continued Support for Cinema
Despite Ittefaq having a moderate box office performance, Khan’s investment helped bring the film to life, demonstrating his commitment to supporting young filmmakers. His philosophy of “backing the jockey, not the horse” reflects his belief in people over projects. As Khan gears up for his next film King, directed by Siddharth Anand, his dedication to meaningful cinema remains evident. His refusal to accept interest on the loan highlights not just his generosity but also his adherence to personal and ethical values in an industry driven by profit.
