The Sindh government has ventured into a new plan to digitize and automate the Sindh Transport Department and its commercial vehicle sectors, and this transformative initiative is meant to enhance efficiency, streamline operations, and improve overall transparency in the transport sector.
Digitization of Sindh Transport Department
The digitization process involves key subsidiaries of the Sindh Transport Department, including the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), Provincial Transport Authority (PTA), Regional Transport Authority (RTA), and Trans Karachi. Under the chairmanship of Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, a meeting was held in Karachi to discuss and review the progress of this initiative.
Minister Memon received a thorough briefing on the digitization and automation efforts. A major highlight of this initiative is the integration of the PTA under a unified software system, which will facilitate the issuance of inter-provincial route permits, this integration is designed to streamline the entire process, making it more efficient and user-friendly for transporters and the public alike.
Key Features and Benefits
One of the standout features of the new system is the introduction of an online application and renewal process for route permits, which will allow transporters to apply for and renew route permits, fitness certificates, and body makers’ permits online, significantly simplifying the process. The minister emphasized that this digital transformation would reduce administrative burdens and enhance the department’s overall efficiency.
Moreover, Minister Memon announced the establishment of a public complaint center within the secretariat. The center will collect and manage all relevant information, ensuring that public grievances are addressed promptly; in order to ensure continuous improvement, officials are required to submit fortnightly progress reports on the digitization and automation system.
The adoption of modern technology is expected to increase revenue and bring much-needed transparency to the transport system. In its initial phase, the vehicle fitness certificate system will go online, a move anticipated to reduce accidents and enhance passenger safety.
