In a progressive move, the use of AI in Supreme Court proceedings has received official backing, as the apex court of Pakistan emphasized the need for its careful integration to boost judicial efficiency. The court acknowledged the potential of Artificial Intelligence in addressing delays and backlog while ensuring that constitutional values and human judgment remain central to the justice system.

Use of AI in Supreme Court: Supportive Role, Not a Replacement

The development stems from an 18-page detailed verdict written by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah in a rent case. In the judgment, the court called on the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee and the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan to draft clear and practical guidelines for AI’s use in the judiciary. It was underlined that while AI can greatly assist in streamlining judicial operations and speeding up legal research by swiftly analyzing legal texts, case law, and statutes, it must never replace the human intellect and empathy necessary in courtrooms. The court firmly stated that AI is to function as a support tool—not a substitute for judicial reasoning.

Fairness, Transparency, and Human Dignity

The court recognized the urgent need for technology-driven solutions to deal with the growing case backlog, especially at the district court level. However, it warned against overreliance on AI, stressing that the technology lacks moral sensitivity and empathetic understanding—traits that are vital for fair judgment. The Supreme Court also emphasized the importance of integrating fairness, transparency, and anti-discrimination measures within AI systems. Most importantly, it reiterated that the use of AI in Supreme Court and broader judiciary must uphold due process, protect judicial autonomy, and ensure that justice remains firmly rooted in compassion, human dignity, and constitutional integrity.
