Elon Musk’s X is improving its communication sector by bestowing the power of audio and video calling upon non-paying users. Previously a feature exclusive to premium subscribers of Twitter Blue, this strategic move represents a big moment in X’s commitment to inclusivity. Announced by Enrique Barragan, an engineer at the company, the decision comes after a phased introduction, initially reaching iOS users last year and subsequently expanding to Android devices, albeit restricted to premium members.
X Non-Paying Users are now Empowered
The announcement comes as X extends the accessibility of audio and video calling to all users, eliminating the necessity for a premium subscription, marking the departure from the previous model where non-paying users were directed to the Premium subscription for utilizing the calling feature. Elon Musk, in a statement at the end of January, outlined the company’s dedication to ensuring the robustness of the feature before opening it up to a broader user base.
Beyond breaking down the paywall for audio and video calls, X is expanding the capabilities of its communication platform. According to Barragan, users can now not only make calls to anyone on the app but also receive calls from a broader spectrum of users. The official X support page reflects this transformative change, stating that all accounts now possess the ability to initiate and receive calls. However, the caveat remains that both parties must have engaged in Direct Messaging at least once, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to user interaction and connection.
